| Known as the Yoga Lady®, Mara Carrico has an extensive background in dance, movement therapy, bodywork, and has been teaching yoga since 1971. Mara is the author of two books: Yoga Journal’s Yoga Basics, and Fitness Yoga, commissioned by the American Council on Exercise. She choreographed and scripted Jane Fonda’s Yoga Exercise Workout video. Mara is also the designer of the YOGA WORK-IN® practice routines -- a CD series created for use at home, office and travel.
Mara started her yoga studies with the Self Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, and has had in-depth training in the Bikram, Iyengar, and Viniyoga methods. She is a certified T’ai Chi Chih instructor and received her massage certification from Anneke Morey, formerly the director of the massage department at Rancho La Puerta.
Dance has been part of Mara’s life since she was a small child. Her training includes study in ballet, ethnic, and interpretive dance. She was a member of the Gene Marinaccio Ballet Company, and has the distinction of being modern dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis’ last protégé.
A teacher’s teacher, Mara initiated the yoga teacher training programs at Samata International in Los Angeles and has been a Continuing Education Specialist for the American Council on Exercise. She is a frequent presenter at yoga, health, and fitness symposiums. Mara has enjoyed a long association with the Golden Door in Escondido California and its sister spa Rancho La Puerta, in Tecate Mexico, where she was co-director of the Inner Journey program and staff trainer of mind-body fitness.
